VIDEO: Grand Princess awaits results from test kits delivered by helicopter

As of this morning, Princess Cruises’ Grand Princess remained at sea off San Francisco pending the results of coronavirus tests on samples collected from 45 of the 3,553 people on board the cruise ships.

The tests were conducted after test kits had been delivered to the ship by pararescue jumpers from the California National Guard’s 129th Rescue Wing.

It was hoped that tests results would be available today.

A statement released by Princess Cruises at 10 p.m. PST yesterday said:

In collaboration with the U.S. Centers of Disease Control (CDC) and local authorities, samples were collected today from 45 people on Grand Princess (which includes a mix of guests and team members). The samples were delivered to the California Department of Public Health in Richmond for processing. The results of these tests are expected by tomorrow.

Over 2,000 Grand Princess Guests Staying in Their Rooms, Awaiting First Coronavirus Test Results

Samples from 45 people onboard the cruise ship Grand Princess, including both guests and the crew, were collected yesterday, March 5, for coronavirus testing.

The samples were delivered to the California Department of Public Health in Richmond for processing, and the results are expected today.

As reported earlier, the ship is being held off San Francisco, California, after a passenger who returned at the end of February from a San Francisco-to-Mexico cruise on Grand Princess died from coronavirus.

Following the reported death, a cluster of individuals has been identified for testing by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). These are predominantly guests and crew who were on board the ship during the ship’s previous voyage, as well as some passengers who developed symptoms linked to the virus.
