In recent months, customs officials in Turkish ports have been showing an increase interest over the declared quantity of bunkers onboard ships, the Skuld P&I Club informed.
As explained, if customs officials discover a difference between the declared bunker quantity in the vessel’s tanks and the quantity calculated by customs officials, any excessive quantum will be confiscated and taken off the vessel for owners’ account.
The authorities considers misdeclaration a criminal act and the vessel’s crew can potentially be accused of smuggling, explained Lena Holm Saxtoft, Assistant Vice President, Claims, of the Skuld P&I Club.
This is a reminder that correct bunker figures shall be available at any given time and at all port calls and that all relevant records shall be kept properly updated on daily basis,
Earlier this month, Kalimbassieris Maritme A.S. issued an alert warning shipping companies about the increased trend of unannounced bunker checks in Turkey ports and urged operators and crews to pay attention on measuring and recording the quantities of bunker properly before calling the Turkish ports, so as to avoid any misdeclaration.
